• A fair price for a domain today ranges between  $8 to $12 (with the exception of a .tv domain, which is more expansive). 
  
   
• You want to make sure that you can manage your domain easy, can transfer you domain and can park your domain for free, and change your name-server at any time. You can usually evaluate this by the website interface. (Hover over menus and see options)
  
  
• Even so it sounds good - try to avoid getting a free or cheap domain with a hosting package unless you know to ask all  the right questions.
