Joomla 1.5
- If you have an existing website, built on Joomla 1.5, and it runs fine. KEEP IT - and prepare to migrate ore re-built between January and April 2012. Until then, make sure you run the latest 1.5 release for security reasons.
- The latest security update is Joomla 1.5.24. Please back up your site before any update, just in case!

Joomla 1.7
- If you are building a new website now in 2011 use Joomla 1.7! If at all possible, keep it "simple", meaning if you can work with one of the templates, provided by Joomla 1.7, stick with it and make them your own through logo and CSS Styling (keeping a copy of your CSS style sheet separate to implement after your 2012 upgrade to Joomla 2.5. ) This is the safest way to make your transition to a brand new long term release of Joomla 2.5. Once you migrated successfully you may develop your own custom template. After all, if you start now, you have just a little more then two month anyway to focus on the content of your new website in the Joomla core, which should upgrade/ migrate just fine and you are ready to start your styling and customization in the first quarter of 2012.
- The latest release from October 17, 2011 is Joomla 1.7.2.

Joomla 1.6
- Joomla 1.6 is obselete. If you currently run a Joomla 1.6 website, backup your site and upgrade now to Joomla 1.7. If your 1.6 Joomla site is up-to-date with the latest release of Joomla 1.6.6 or Joomla 1.6.5 You can directly update to the latest Joomla 1.7 release. Go to Extension> Extension Manager and choose in the second menu line ( under the heading "Extension Manager" the "Upgrade" tab. It's that simple! - Still - make a backup first... just in case:)
- If your current Joomla 1.6 website is not at least Joomla 1.6.5 then you have to upgrade to Joomla 1.6.5 or 1.6.6 first, before you can update to Joomla 1.7 please read here
